Bad advice that made you laugh

I'll start. I have an old ten speed that I love. It is a heavy thing with full fenders and rear rack. I like it because it fits me well and is comfortable not for its speed. While out the other day I had a fellow ask me how fast I was. When I told him; he told me I should swap my 5 speed rear for a 9. Then I could do 40 mph. I smiled and said I'd have to think about it or something like that. I'm not mean. But the only way that bike is doing 40 mph is with a motor on board. I did get a good laugh though. Have you had experiences like this?

hermanchauw 05-25-17 03:38 PM

"8 speed is obsolete".

Along the same lines.

You should buy a brand new (insert aluminum framed modern road bike here with sora/105 groupset) to replace your (insert one of my columbus SLX steel bikes will full dura ace groupsets.)

I always laugh at that one.

"You must buy a 29. 26 is old stuff, 29 is faster because its wheels are bigger." Heard at a LBS.

The main product that bike manufacturers sell is BS. The most important component of the bike is the motor. Mine is 74 and rusty.

I bet if I chased you threatening to spray with PB blaster you'd ride faster! hahaha

You are behind the times, the new MUST is 27.5.

Unless you're very tall.

Vick's VapoRub is good substitute for chamois cream. Makes me want to sing "great balls of fire".

wd-40 restores brake pads.

I guess you bought your motor the same year I got mine. I wonder if a ring and valve job would help us. ;)

OK, did nobody else read this one? I am still laughing.

There is a certain Facebook group that shall remain nameless which gets constant questions about tire size (I bought this Haanjo with 27.5" tires and I want to put 700x30c tires on it. Is this a good idea?).

I have given up even trying to be of assistance because no one seems to have any reading comprehension skills at all. Still, as a trainwreck spectacle it can be hard to look away as they bumble their way to vague comprehension.

Pull the head for some serious work.

Rusty is nothing. It's when the seals don't work that's tough.

Seriously, your post was amusing, thx!

I had a mt. bike shop tell me to spray my carbon bike with WD-40 to keep it in top shape. :foo: I never went back to that shop.

I had a non cycling friend put Ben Gay on her legs after a ride because they hurt. She wouldn't listen to me.

First time I warped a wheel after a spoke broke. LBS owner said: "You need a new wheel. $90."

Second time I warped a wheel on a hard sideways skidding stop, but no broken spoke. LBS owner said "You need a new wheel."

Mechanic said: "WHANG! WHANG!" against the shop's massive wooden table. Wheel was straighter than when I bought it used. "$10, please." No problems in more than six months of hard riding.

Same shop. Different mechanics. True story.

Ah, yes. The 27.5er, bicycling's admission that 29ers were a stupid idea:rolleyes: I suspect the next great innovation in mountain biking will be the 559er;)

cyccommute 05-26-17 07:08 AM

A 700C tire is exactly the same as a 27" tire. You don't need a 27" tire.

Gravel bikes??? I imagine a day in the near future when I'll need separate bikes for wet or dry gravel....

Was going to laugh at this until I remembered that I actually do, in fact, own "wet" and "dry" road bikes.

Listening to an "expert" tell a 350lb rider that 2.0mm/1.8mm double butted spokes are a better choice than 2.0mm straight gauge spokes for their wheels.

leob1 05-26-17 09:40 AM

Mix alcohol with motor oil for a cheap bike lube.
