Pedal Bearing Race And Keeper Nut
I had to disassemble a clipless pedal to re-lube the bearings. The outer bearings has the race nut, and then a keeper nut (and then a rubber external plug). But the nuts are recessed inside the pedal. I tighten the race so that it's just up to the the ball bearings, and then tighten the keeper nut just finger tight (although with pliers since I can't get my fingers in there). But, that isn't thight enough to keep the assembly from coming off the spindle, and if I tighten it too much it binds the pedal. I need to tighten the keeper against the race (without the race tightening more) but can't get anything in there to hold the race in place while I tighten the keeper nut. Suggestions?

You can get an inexpensive set of metric "deep-well" sockets (1/4" drive). In my experience with MKS pedals, the cones are 13mm and the locknuts are 10mm. I can jam these nuts together by turning the 10mm nut clockwise *or* the 13mm race *counter-clockwise*... this is a handy way to adjust the bearings.

just the other day i checked a couple of old quill pedals to see if they were lubricated properly. they had loose ball bearings, a threaded cone, a male tabbed washer that fit into a female groove in the spindle and a locknut. at first i didn't see the tabbed washer and wondered 'how the heck am i supposed to adjust the cones?' before i noticed the old grease encrusted washer in there.
so... is it possible that a washer is missing?
BTW, IIRC i think i had a set of pedals that had a plastic, or rubber, end piece wac actually instrumental in holding the lock nut in place... they may have been an old set of eggbeaters. IDK. maybe i dreamed it.
