Rim tape keeps moving
I recently installed new Velox rim tap to my Mavic road wheels. I'm having an issue of the tape wanting to slide around which leads to a flat. The width is correct for the rim and if I go wider it looks like it will interfere with the bead of the tire. I've cleaned the rim with brake kleen, alcohol and the like but the tape still wants to slide around. Help is greatly appreciated.

Is it the cloth one with the sticky backing or the plastic band type?
I had the same issue with some new rims and the factory rim tape and ended up using Stan's no tubes tubeless tape instead and finally was able to get it right even though I don't plan on running tubeless. Also make sure you take off the tape and clean the entire surface with isopropyl alcohol thoroughly so the new tape can adhere properly. |
Tubeless tape with adhesive is a much better alternative as it sticks to the rim bed and doesn't move around. Tesa 4289 strapping tape is what i use and its the same stuff as Stan's tubeless tape but is better value because it comes in a bigger roll per $/£.
The tape seems very strong. I wrap my rims in 2 layers. When installing it be sure to pull it tight when laying it in the rim bed. It's also lighter than conventional rim tape so you save few grams. Any other adhesive tubeless tape will be good enough for the job. |
I have had good luck with fused loop tapes that snap into place . they're stiff plastic..
On my small wheel, single wall, (Brompton) rim, It went over a rubber one, to cure a flat, on the inside of the tube, that happened when just the plastic loop one was used. ... |
Try wider rim tape
I go so wide that the tape runs up the vertical sides of the rims and stops just under the bead hook the tape is actually pinched between the tire and rim it sure isn't going to move anyplace and the tires aren't blowing off the rims, so it seems the hooks don't mind |

I've gone to this Kapton tape https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but I never had problems with the Velox. You have to pull it tight while wrapping and I think an inch or two of overlap helps keep it secure.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes , this is the cloth tape. I may just try the strapping tape.

.
...check the adhesive of your tape to see if it's still sticky. It's possible to get very old tape, where the adhesive has suffered from age and poor storage, but more likely is that when you installed it the first time, there was gunk on the rim that transferred to the tape, making it more or less useless now. Just a guess. |

Velox doesn't have aggressive adhesive on it, as it is meant to remove with little to no residue. A possible [likely] cause, is that you have tape too narrow for the rim; when properly applied, it should span from sidewall-to-sidewall/cover the spoke nipples on a single-wall rim. You also have to be sure that all of whatever solvent you used to clean the rim has flashed off before you apply the tape, or it will weaken the adhesive.
It cannot interfere with the beads/hooks unless the sidewalls on the rim are uncommonly short, which they are not on the usual Mavic rims. |
I've used a small dab of contact cement between spoke holes to hold tape in place on Velocity rims.

I have had luck using a glue stick in a few places on the rim.

I had a pinch flat yesterday from the rim tape folding over a tiny bit when mounting my tire. I am new to these "new" style rims. I have always used older rims with rubber rim strips. Never had a problem. I had to take the tire lever and guide the rim tape out of under the bead so it wouldn't pinch again.
