Rear rack question

I'm messing around with my current biking setup. I have a rear rack on one bike (older MTB/hybrid) that mounts to the rear brake bolt. I have another bike (more of a touring bike) with mounting points on the seat stay, but is there any reason I couldn't use the same rack on the other bike? Anything I should keep an eye out for?

I assume the rack is mounted to the seat stay bridge on the MTB and that the touring bike has a seat stay bridge as well.

If so, you should be able to transfer the rack over provided

a) the rack will clear your new bike's tires/fenders. MTBs are usually 26". A "touring bike" is pretty vague and can be anywhere from 26" to 700c to 27"

b) the touring bike has lower mounting points

c) the rack's upper mounting tongue is long enough

You could use the rack having seatstay mounting arms on the other bike by using P-clamps on it's seatstays if there are no threaded mounting points.

Many racks made for seatstay mounting arms also have provisions for a central bracket to allow use with a brake bridge center mounting bolt.

You could also use one of these for the MTB seatpost clamp which would allow you to use the two arm rack supports.

As HillRider pointed out, many, if not most, racks are set up for use with seatstays as well as attaching to the brake bridge. You just need to get the proper rack stays. Assuming that the rack uses flat stays, you can get the stays from a number of places. This is one of the first to pop up on a search.

Mash Ups. Not as deliciously evil as rumrunn6

Having swapped the cantilever brakes for v-brakes everything got messed up so I had to add a bolt. I guess I should have bought shorter v-brakes. OTOH the rack as originally fitted was not horizontal, not that I have come across that one before but now it is.

Otherwise in terms of things to look out for you might hope that a rack mounted to fixing points, braze ons, on the seating stays might be a bit more, left to right, horizontally stable.

It has not been tested yet. I am waiting for some P-Clips to fit the rear reflector prior to putting the bag/panniers on it. Wet finger says I can carry tools and spare inner tubes and shop for two boxes of Cat Food and, perhaps, five tins of beans.

Soon to not be UK when Scotland, Ireland, Wales and London up sticks. Apparently the Aussies are trying to make as much of a mess of things in some respects as we are but falling short of our political prowess.

I assume you are Boston Mass. I used to be Boston England.

Which expression? I did not mention Marmite or Vegemite.

.. Oh sorry. Wet finger. Your stick it in your mouth and then stick it up in the wind in order to determine the Winds direction according to how cold different sides of your finger feel as a result of evaporation. It's extremely accurate.
