ok.. my guess is that the ultegra shifters on the right controls the rear deraileurs and the left controls the front deraileurs, right?

i got this pic from my friends bike.. but didn't have the chance to check it out clearly...

Yes, you are correct. The right hand shifter is for the rear derailleur, the left is for the front.

Wow that's a really nice bike, the 05' shifters look great.
The left unit is for the front (like the brakes). The right unit is for the rear. The large lever always moves you to a larger cog. The small lever always moves you to a smaller cog. The upshifting and downshifting is completely opposite because of this.
So for the left (front) unit, the large one moves you to a large chain ring (upshift), the small moves you to a small chain ring (downshift).
On the right (back) unit, the large one moves you to a large cog (downshift), the small moves you to a small cog (upshift).

btw, just got done with the brakes cable routing...

yeah he got the 04 tarmac.. great bike. thus far i'm his mechanic in changing tires, cleaning cogs, etc. i give him a lot of crap about not taking better care of his bike. ;)
