BMX Bike for a 10 year old - which one is better
Hello,
I am planning to buy a 20" BMX bike for my son. Planning on Mangoose or GT. Please advise.Thank You. |
All are Imported Brand Names are Commodities.. buy a bike at a Bike Shop .
1st pick the shop, they will be better before and after the sale. What is the goal? JRA, Racing Motos or doing tricks ? |
If you are a little older and you were a teen around or before Hoffman.. Mongoose and GT (and most other names) are not what they used to be. Like mentioned, all commodities now.
|
GT... by a margin... unless you take time to track down a GOOD Mongoose... they still make a couple models that are decent...
and dyno/gt are still better than most 'gooses. my advice... find a decent Fit, WTP, Mosh,or any number of real BMX bikes... used! might be less than a walmart bike, and will be a much better ride... get the used bike... go through it, and wind up with a great bike for your son. did you ask this question on the BMX forum? they will, i'm sure, have lots of better alternatives to offer you. late 80's, early 90's GT's are great bikes, too... and i've had some nice 'Gooses here, too... heck... hit your local BMX shop up... see what they have, used. and if your son isn't going for a "trick" bike, don't get a bike with stunt pegs... they are heavy, and just cause shin scars... as will the longer axles they screw onto. look through your local Craigslist... you might be surprised at some of the great BMX deals you find... |

24" BMX cruisers are worth a look if you want to get your son something BMX-ish in style that is a little more able to be used for distance rides. They can be raced, too. Pay attention to what his friends ride. Getting him a skinny tire road bike when all his friends are on BMX may not be the best thing. OTOH, also give thought to any riding aspirations you and he might have, and buy accordingly. |

Don't buy him that; it's a kids bike with limited use. Buy him a small cyclocross or road bike that he can use to go on road rides with you and perhaps even race on. Go to your LBS and pick out a good one.
bmx are durable and simple. beyond that the key thing is: what does the kid want? If he wants a bmx or a fixie or ???? nothing else will be the same. |
Go with a stranger or a fitbike or s&m ,haro or cult or what they have at the LBS. Most brands that we remember from our childhood are not the best anymore. Ask your kid what he wants... He probably knows already. Dont get him a roadbike. Youll run a 50/50 gamble on ruining biking for him
