My steel 1981 Trek 957 starts to shimmy if I remove both hands from the handlebars when going > 18mph or so. It only started doing this when I replaced all the original components with new stuff. New headset, new (shorter stem), etc.

I suspect it is the shorter stem.

In any case, I just ride with one hand in the handlebars at all times unless going real slow.
