Replacing forks

I'm sure you guys talk about this stuff until you're blue in the face. I apologize if this is a typical newbie goes. A friend gave me a GT Psyclone with a badass powdercoated frame. It's got blown shocks but high quality components (based on my knowledge), everything is Shimano Deore. Rear Derail. is DX and front is XT. The crankset is Suntour?? never heard of that...

Anyway the inside diameter of the headtube measures about 1 5/16". Is this typical? I was expecting 1 1/8". It came with a threaded stem and steerer and I want to replace those components. I'm confused by the measurement.

Thanks in advance for all input.

Yeah, that sounds like the headset cup outer diameter (34.0mm) for a 1 1/8 headset. You'll probably want to convert to threadless when you buy your new fork. That'll take the fork, new threadless headset and a new stem. Good luck.
