Seatpost clamp for carbon frame
This is my first build of a carbon frame, and I don't want to do something dumb and cause problems. The seatpost clamp that came with the frame (Eddy Merckx LXM) looks like this:
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-...-NxXDhnc-M.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-...-CWV9d93-M.jpg There is only a single screw to tighten it, but there is a place for a second screw. I cannot locate a screw / threaded stub that will fit. Can / should I use this with a single screw? Does anyone have a source for a replacement clamp or a second screw that would fit this one? The taller clamp should spread the clamping force over a larger area, so that makes some logical sense to me. But without the second screw that effect is lost. The inner diameter if the clamp, relaxed, is 34.9mm if that is helpful. Any suggestions? UPDATE: I found this searching by image - https://www.dolan-bikes.com/double-b...ost-clamp.html It matches but is on a UK website. Any US availability? |
not necessarily, the clamp compresses its full width, under pressure from the bolt and barrel nut, there are single bolt ones sold..
Seems the angled slot, to not align with the slot in the frame tube , Is that Tube Not Round? is a common feature of clamps that are to be used on CF frames.. more accurately the seat tube ID matches the OD of the seat post, the better.. .... |
Does the second hole have a place for a screw to screw into? Or is it just a hole with not threads? If it's threaded you can get a stainless steel screw and use that. I'm not saying that's correct or not, you have to decide that.
What ever you do, us a torque wrench to tighten the screw(s). |
The clamp slides nicely over the seat tube - no play. I emailed the UK source to see if they would sell a bolt, washer, and "barrel nut". I didn't know the proper name, thanks for that.
The seatpost is a good fit into the seat tube as well. I like the barrel nut design, rather than threading into alloy - it should work better when removed/replaced multiple times when adjusting or replacing saddles. |

I don't see anything like that in the picture.

Looks like you got shorted some hardware.
I would contact the person you got the frame from, or get new hardware, or a replacement clamp. |
I bought this frame and fork more than a year ago, so I'm on my own to get this clamp sorted out. If I have to buy another clamp because I can't get the hardware I need, so be it.
It has a carbon fork as well, so I'll need to sort out the expansion plug too. Can't (or shouldn't) use a star nut in the carbon steerer. |
Metric Dowel Nuts are what you're looking for. https://www.google.com/search?q=metr....0.lJ4hbf3d99w Not sure what size allen head bolt that is but it looks like you need one with a small outside diameter washer which are hard to find but may be the same size as what are on many handlebar stem clamp bolts. LBS may have them (bolt w/washer) or order from Ebay, etc.

looking at this image it does appear that it should have 2 bolts,

Yep, that's the frame.

Ok, You bought overseas for the discount, but the piece fell out while in shipping.. Seller has been notified?, Good Luck.
|
Nope, I bought it used but unbuilt from a guy in the states about 1-2 years ago. With a move to Kentucky, I'm just now getting around to building it.
Where he purchased the frame I couldn't say. But it was unbuilt as I bought it. |
There are high end shops in Colorado to buy a whole new Clamp.. I think Competitive Cyclist Sells Eddy's Stuff..
