Campy/Shimano
hey guys, i got a campy 9spd road bike. I'd like a larger cog on the back but upgrading to 11 spd is expensive af.
I am changing my wheelset, it has options, campy or shimano/sram freehub. I was thinking of buying the shimano freehub version and putting a 11-34t on it. if you'd like more info, please comment. |
FWIW, Campagnolo is all special order out here in the boondocks, Shimano is more common.
Jtek has a rear pulley to change the cable travel per click, since they are less than interchangeable.. |
Not gonna work. Not well, at least.
Campagnolo 9 speed cogs are 4.55 mm apart, so that's how far each click on your Campagnolo shifter will move the rear derailleur laterally. Shimano & SRAM 9-speed cogs are spaced 4.34 mm apart. Your Campy shifter is going to move the derailleur and chain too far per click to play nicely with a Shimano/SRAM cassette. With each shift away from whatever cog you used to fine tune your index adjustment, you'll get about two tenths of a millimeter mm farther out of alignment. You can probably make it work well for a small range of a few gears, but it won't shift nicely across the whole cassette. Even if you were to overcome that problem (like by using a Shiftmate adapter or something), you'd need a long cage rear derailleur to handle a wide-range cassette with a 34-tooth big cog. Your Campy derailleur -- and most road derailleurs for that matter -- would be really unlikely to have the necessary capacity for something that big. You may have other options to lower the gearing somewhat, like maybe a Miche cassette built for Campagnolo spacing or replacing your chainrings/crankset. |
Moving to be near sibling.

Miche makes Campy corsets with bigger gears. Look there first.
(I am leaving that autocorrect there just for fun) |
Thanks for replies everyone

Here is what I did for my brother who owns a Campagnolo 9 speed equipped bike. He was having problems with hills, so I found him a triple crank. The front derailleur didn't like the triple, so I found him a new front derailleur cage for compact/triple derailleurs. Everything now works just fine, but the problem is that 9 speed stuff is getting harder to find and you have to spend more and more time finding parts to keep your bike on the road. Yes, upgrading to 11 speed can be expensive, but less so with Campy because you don't have to upgrade wheels. it also might happen that you will no longer be able to repair your shifters. Nobody likes spending money they don't have to, but sometimes it may be the best way to go

i was thinking; Shimano 105 Groupset. 11 Speed. Very Good Condition. | eBay or Campagnolo Chorus Groupset = 11 Speed | eBay but if i buy either one, what do i need to complete the groupset? |
Before I could recommend either option, need to know what you are starting with; your current large/small chainring and cogs. The 105 you linked to has a pretty high low gear (52-36 chainrings with 11-28 cassette) and uses a braze on FD. The campy does not specify anything about the gearing you will be getting, so it may end up being a higher low gear than what you have now.
