Trek 1200C Question About Tire Width
 

I have a Trek 1200C bike frame and need to know if it will accommodate 700x40mm tire mounted on OEM Alex AT450 Rims. Can someone help me on this?

Do they not have the ISO number of the rim size in tiny letters somewhere on the rim. Probably next to the AT450. But in really tiny letters. Without the specs on the rim I wouldn't begin to say yay or nay.

As for will they fit on the frame? What's on it now? 25mm? 40 minus 25 is 15. half of 15 is 7.5.

If the 40 has a smooth street tread, then you can check to see if you have 7.5 mm plus what ever you feel a safe gap between the sidewalls and tread of your current tire to the frame and components. The 40mm tire is probably going to have knobby tread, so you'll have to guess how many more mm to add for them.

It's not exact, but it'll get you a better idea than completely guessing. Unless someone knows for sure.

Won't fit... 1200's are close fitting race frames.

you'll find that 32's barely clear the brakes, and may in fact rub them.... at least that's what i ran into on one i had here...

and then... there is your post about the skinny rims... dude... 40's won't fit the rims either.

Agreed, good tire choice but on the wrong bike. Like putting monster truck tires on your base model F-150 pick up. Andy.

Small print on rim label
 

Thanks for your input on original question. I took a look at the rim label and it reads Alex AT450 in small print it reads 622x14. Would the second number “14” be the rim’s inside dimension ?

yep. narrow rim for a narrow frame.

Thanks for your opinion. I took a shot at mounting a 700x35. No can do! It cleared side to side, but rubbed upper section of the brake calipers. Again, thanks.

I have a 1200 from the early 00's that I use for chasing my kids around the park. Same Alex wheels, biggest tyre I've run on them is 28's. Might be able to do 30's but the other problem that I've run into with those narrow rims is getting the brakes to open wide enough to get the wheel out, but still have enough braking force when closed.
