Humming rear hub?
 

I'm a newbie rider, but mechanically-minded. My three-week old Gary Fisher Wahoo (Full Specs) is making a rubbing/humming noise in the rear. I'm assuming it's the rear hub, a Shimano RM60. It's definitely corresponding to my speed. It hums while pedaling, coasting, braking, not braking, turning, going straight, uphill, downhill, etc... The only time it stops is when I get off to put my ear next to it while I spin the wheel... then I hear no humming :mad: . So my weight on the bike is the only change in hearing the hum or not.

Is this normal? Do I need grease? Or do I need the trusty ear of a seasoned mechanic? I'm trying to learn all I can about doing my own maintenance, so if it's a job I can do, all the better. If I need the pros, I can do that, too.

Tire on the road? Tends to hum.

Ya know, I thought of that. This sound is a bit wobbly, uneven, patterned. Still could be the tire, though. Would it make the same noise on dirt? I think mine does.

If it's a "hum" it's probably the tire. Uneven? spin the wheel while wathicng the tire dead-on from behind. Does it jump up and down, or wobble side to side? It might be unevenly seated.


If it's a "grind" and ESPECIALLY if you feel resistance in the rear whel when freewheeling...if it coasts little or not at all under the rim's own momentimum...you may have something wrong with your bearings.

If this is the case, I am very dissapointed in Shimano.

Mtb offroad treads hum? Hubs don't hum...clickety some of them do.
