Replacement fly wheel for Claris RD
Hi
I'm going mad with shimano's website. I need to buy replacement fly wheels for my shimano claris 8 speed road bike. I can't find a replacement anyway and different parts of the site have it listed as RD-2300 and RD-2400, neither of which seem to be available anymore, and sometimes come up with MTB derailleurs. Has anyone any idea what I can do, tempted to just buy a new claris RD, but would rather save myself £20.

If you are referring to the rear derailleur pulleys, they don't need to be specific to a Claris derailleur. Just count the number of teeth on your current pulleys and buy a set with the same number of teeth. A google search for "8 speed derailleur pulley" should help you find something.

dsaul says it right. I'll add some terminology advice too- Claris is only a price point/grade/intention of use label. Over time this label remains on the outsides while the component has gone through changes (usually small) as the production continues. So Shimano also denotes these differences within any one name with model numbers. These numbers are specific to one version. (Think of it like car names. The actual car has evolved over the years although the name remains the same). This is why including these model numbers is important to narrow down the possibilities to just one.
As to the pulley replacement be aware that as an indexed system the upper (or guide) pulley is different from the lower (or tension) pulley. When buying them make sure they are index compatible (as well as have the same tooth count and bushing width/cog count as the original). When installing them take care to not mix up their proper locations. Andy.

An entire new Claris RD can be had for fourteen to twenty-five dollars. Again depending on model. If this is an old claris, you might not find it, or maybe not as inexpensive.
Don't assume a new Claris rear derailleur will work with the shifters you have. I don't know myself either way.
edit:
Oh... if I'd read all your post I wouldn't have stated something you already knew.

I just finished futzing around with replacing a pulley wheel on a RD...I tried several wheels from old derailleurs I had in my spare parts box. None of them works just right. Finally...just a couple of weeks ago...I decided to purchase a new RD. And coincidently it is a Claris 8...for about the $25 (U.S.) mentioned above...and I've very happy with it.

Compared to my co worker i'm a luddite. No smart thing, no GPS, ride w/ steel tubing and frame pumps. So ask me about anything before 1990 and I have a chance to star. The rest I just make up Thanks, Andy
