Bike build questions

Hi all – I’m relatively new to the site (one prior posting) and definitely a greenhorn when it comes to a complete bike build.

I’m building up a cable shift/hydraulic disc brake Urbanskey frame that I hope will eventually be capable all-around bike. I’m just now sorting out the braking system thanks to some helpful information from that earlier posting, but now the questions are now about the fork, axle type and geometry.

The frame has a tapered headset (1-1/8 – 1-1/2) and already has Cane Creek bearing races pressed in. The low-cost fork alternative is the Lyndskey Endurance Disc, which has integrated fender bosses (something I’d like to have) but has a straight 1-1/8 steerer tube and uses a QR axle, both of which I perceive as negatives. Am I right in assuming that using a tapered tube to match the headset and TA rather than QR is worthwhile?

Assuming that I did want to go with a tapered/TA fork, the next questions are with respect to geometry. The fork options from Lyndskey all have a rake of 45mm, and the headtube spec for the Urbanskey in my frame size is 71.8 degrees. I have only a rudimentary understanding of the impact of trail, but from what I’ve read, this combination would yield something on the order of 6.5cm which would seem to be closer to the range for CX rather than road bikes.

There are third-party fork alternatives with a rake of 47mm, which would equate to trail of about 6.3cm for the Urbanskey, closer to that for road bikes. By way of comparison, the trail for Specialized Roubaix – the only non-Lyndskey endurance bike I had the specs handy for – is 5.9cm (rake=49mm; head tube angle 72 degrees).
I frankly have no idea if these rake/trail difference are significant or even perceptible. I intend to phone Lyndskey to ask their recommendation but would also like to ask for some guidance here.

Thanks in advance and apologies for all the newbie questions.
