Run 8 Speed chain on 9 speed chainrings

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere else on the forum...I need to replace my front chainrings.
Can I use 9 speed fronts or should I stick with chainrings specified for 8 speed chains? I would like to use the FSA chainrings (130mm 39-53) since they're ramped, etc for better front shifting, but I understand that the 9 speed front rings are slightly different in terms of width between the outer and inner rings.

I'm pretty sure chainrings haven't changed. It's only the chain that's different (slighly narrower)

It's generally a pretty minimal difference. I've done almost exactly what you're suggesting in the past without any problems. If there was an actual difference between the ring spacing I can't tell and neither could my shifter (but I was running a friction shifter so no clue how well it would work on index). I suspect that you'd be just fine however.

Conventional BF wisdom says it doesn't matter if your rings are 8 or 9 speed.
