Mixing FSA crank with a Shimano BB?

I just did this and the crank was a booger to get thru the external M800 BB even though they are both 24mm (crank is prob big, off a few thousands). Anyway, had to hit it with a soft mallet pretty hard to get it started and then it wouldn't go all the way through leaving 5mm between the spider and the BB. It's self-extracting, so I put on the other arm and it pulled it thru easily, like butter. It spins great and rides fine. Have any of you had trouble mixing brands?

Why bother? BB's aren't exactly expensive, would just replace the Shimano with an MegaExo, and get it right in the first place

I'd just installed the new Shimano BB which replaced the old FSA one which was crap even w/o the wear. I had no idea that tolerances would be off that much when stuff is supposed to follow standard sizes. Bottomline, it's in, it works.

I use the Shimano BB with my FSA Gossamer (MegaExo) cranks. Hasn't been a problem and no heavy tapping was required, just a few firm taps with a rubber mallet which is good as there is no excessive play.

I tried to put a Gallop crankset into Shimano BB52. Spindle could not get through all the way in even with heavy hammering. When i hammered it out, the spindle took the drive side bearing with it.😮

When i compared the Gallop spindle with another Shimano Deore LX equivalent, it has two thicker parts along its length whereas the Shimano one is uniform thickness.

M730 for Stronglight Mygal/. same JIS BB..
