Rims Ruined???

I've made a bad mistake.....

I bought some new Bontrager Racelites for my road bike, got the tires on, everything was great.. The wheels spun perfectly round.. I was so happy..

Then I did it.... Due to me ruining a rim on my last bike (by not checking the spoke tension; thus test riding with completely loose spokes and ruining a rim), I began to tighten the blade spokes on my new wheel set becuase they felt a bit loose... Welp, lets just say I really f**ked them up.... Radial and trueness is now way, way off...

My question is, have I just blown $450? Or can the wheels be re-trued and made round again??

Any info would be great...

Thanks.

If you aren't sure how to true a wheel, take them to your LBS! Its probably fine, its hard to mess up a rim just with the spoke tension.

Take them in, and have them fix it. Then practice wheel truing and tensioning on some wheels that don't cost 450$.

peace,
sam

I'll do that... And you're certainly right about practicing on "cheaper" wheels....

Thanks for the reply..

I don't see how you got it that out of true. Just turn each one 1/4 turn, all the way around the wheel...

If you don't know how to true, much less build a wheel, how did you decide the spokes were loose?

I did that once as a super-n00b. Didn't realize that some spokes were supposed to seem "loose". I think youd have to really try to screw up the rims permanently, though.

Sounds as if you decieded which spokes were loose, by inexperienced comparative feel. If so and you tightened spokes indiscriminatly, you most likely sent it outta round. Not hard to do. Despite what is said here. Mostly with good intentions.

My favorite sign "Shop labor $40 an hour, $50 if you watch, $80 if you worked on it first.

Take you wheels to a competent LBS and ask for the wheel guy to look at it and fix it. In my shop that would be me.

Anyone know of a decent reference site that explains the basics of wheel truing for those of us that simply can't resist trying it ourselves?

Are there any posts that aren't answered with a link to Sheldon Brown?

https://sheldonbrown.com/wheelbuild.html#tensioning

Thats actually a part of the wheel building article (which you should read, btw, it will help you understand wheels better), but it gets into the tensioning and truing part, which is relevant regardless of whether or not you are working with a new wheel.

peace,
sam
