SRAM Grip Shifters: with Shimano?

Will any SRAM grip shifter work with SRAM x4 7-speed rear derailleur, or do I need a particular model? Also, will SRAM grip shifters work with a 1990's vintage Shimano 3x front derailleur? Thanks.

SRAM have two lines of twist shifters. The MRX Comp and MRX Pro are compatible with Shimano rear derailleurs, and the numbered series (X3 or 3.0, etc) are compatible with SRAM rear derailleurs. MTB front derailleurs all have the same cable pull ratio (to my understanding), and thus all front shifters are the same in that regard.

In general, any "numbered" product from SRAM is compatible with SRAM, and any "named" product from SRAM is compatible with Shimano. I'm sure there are exceptions to that rule, but that's generally how it works I think.

That sums it up pretty well, at least for 7, 8, 9-speed stuff.

There is an extra twist in this, that front Sram shifters will work with all Sram front der and Shimano front der. One only needs to be careful with the rear. I myself cling to Sram Grip Shifters and to Shimano derailleurs. If the name includes 'ESP' or 'X' (for eXact, 1:1) it is for an Sram specific rear der only. Those that will work with Shimano will include 2:1 actuation ratio in the description.

Sorry, confused

So would EITHER of the two twist grip shifters work with my SRAM X4 rear derailleur? Thx. (I understand now that either will work with the Shimano FD that I have on the bike).

For a SRAM RD you have to use a SRAM numbered shifter. The MRX shifters will only work with Shimano RDs. (MRX is a name, sorta. No number in it, anyway.)

No, MRX (there is an x but not separated) will not work with rear Sram X4. MRX is a Shimano series.

The three bikes I ride all have SRAM X7 RDs and Microshift FDs. One has X7 trigger shifters, one has X9 twist shifters and the other has X7 twist shifters. 9-speed all.

I'm looking to replace a Shimano deore lx on a 1996 cannondale m500 with SRT 600 grip shifters. Can I use a shimano rear derailleur or do I need to fo Sram? Not sure what the actuation ratio is on the older grip shifters.

If you replace Shimano rear derailleur with the same speed Shimano derailleur, you will be fine.
