Bar end shifter 5 speed friction

This is for a '70s era road bike. I plan to install a modern Shimano rear derailleur but only have 5 sprockets as I am using the old wheel/hub for frame spacing reasons. I can use the old down tube shifters, but am considering going to a bar end friction shifter for the rear. Will a LH/front work as well as a RH in friction mode, or do I have to get a RH shifter?

Friction shifters do not distinguish between front and rear derailleur control. You can use a friction shifter for either need.

the sun tour friction-ratchet and older Campagnolo fully friction bar ends ... they only made one.
a set for bikes with 2 derailleurs included 2 of them,

now, because the 2 mounting pieces are fitting the levers in from the inside, a mirror image of each other,
Aesthetically focused people will notice if you put the Shimano left lever on the right side, , but it will work fine.

Thanks guys. Luckily there are plenty of other aesthetic issues on the bike and rider to distract people from any shifter issues .......

Very nice bike.

Back in the day, the SunTour ratcheting bar-ends were the best, especially when combined with a SunTour VGT or VGT Luxe rear derailleur. There are plenty out there to purchase:
Vintage Suntour Barcon Bar End Shifters: 5/6/7/8 speed Retro Friction - Bike Recyclery
(Ebay listings vary from $20 to $120.)

Pre-10-speed Shimano bar-end shifters all offered a friction setting for their rear shifter.
