Replacement for Shimano IG chain

I have researched every possible avenue for this issue, and found a lot of conflicting info. Is there a current consensuses for a replacement chain that actually works with a vintage a Mtn. bike that was originally equipped with 8sp. Shimano XT components that were spec'd for the IG chain? The original IG chain is 7.1mm wide. The rear cassette I have is actually compatible with both the IG and HG chain, but the front chain rings are dedicated to the IG only. Has anyone had success with another brand chain that is 7.1mm wide and actually works with front rings that were designed for the IG chain?

AFAIK, HG and IG chains are still the same internal spec for width. So any chain you find that has the narrower external width of the IG should work fine. KMC and SRAM make them. But I might be wrong, I always just thought the sprockets on the IG cassette where thicker but teeth sculpted to give shifting performance. Though internally the same, the externally wider HG would hit the wider part of the adjacent sprockets were they were not sculpted and full thickness.

Now if you are asking which mfr or model chain that is also IG compatible is better, then I'll stay out of that argument.

Current 8 speed chains work fine. Don't over think it.

My chainring says "IG chain only". I replaced the chain with KMC X8. Still works as well.

8 speed chain works for any thing not 9 and above. 'speeds'/cog count.
