Wheels and tires

Current bike has 700x23c wheels and tires. I’m looking to get something wider, more durable for the roads. Suggestions that would fit a 90s Trek 2300?

ask your bike shop if they can try some 28mm tires on your bike

Measure the clearance between the tires, the fork and the frame. Then you can assess how much larger tires will fit - maybe different front and rear. Once you have the clearance measurements, feel free to share here if you wish further suggestions.

So long as he's using a 700c tire that clears the frame and fork, there's nothing 'wrong' about it. It's not uncommon to switch to tires of different widths.

Those wheels will handle much wider tires. The real test is what will fit in that frame and fork. You'll have to measure and eyeball it. A few mm of clearance is a good thing.
