The actual manufacturer's intent probably had nothing to do with "faking". Whoever manufactured these shifters simply "borrowed" Shimano's design and decided to mass-produce and sell these shifters for much less money under their own brand ("Great Wall" or whatever). They are knock-offs, but the manufacturer had no intent to hide that fact.

And then someone else came along, who decided take it one step further: cheaply masqueraded these as genuine Shimano and started selling them for more money on Ebay.

No the intention was creating a fake product. The shifters pictured several times here are marked as Shimano shifters and are attempting to look like Shimano shifters. I don't stick up for fakes and I suggest others do the same.

When you put a logo that is not your own logo on a product designed to look exactly like the original product using their own logo it is called a FAKE! Not a knock-off or a artistic rendition but a FAKE FAKITY FAKE FAKE FAKE! In this case on a product not worth faking.

I also just got some fakes from ebay from a UK seller.

Poor quality, also they are missing the reach adjustment for the brake levers. This is what made me suspect that they were fake. I also have high in mirror on the lever that should have low on it
