tc-8 thread chaser substitute?
Hi,
Have an old Specialized Sequoia I picked up. Decent shape except for needed a new small ring on the 3 ring crank. Threads were shot by previous owner and 3" bearing puller not working. Figured I'd buy the bicycle research tc-8 thread chaser but apparently it's no longer made. Are there any substitutes? Is a larger bearing puller better? Or am I looking at hammer and chisel and replace everything including the axle? Kills me to have to replace everything so hoping for some suggestions. Thanks! |
You might read this thread about Jacobs wedges-

Check out Jim Stein's tooling. He offers an oversize tap and extractor. Andy

...I have one of those Stein oversize extractors. It works as advertised, but it's not cheap, and they seem to go in and out of stock, so you might be lucky or you might have to wait for one.
Before I got that, I had pretty good luck with Jacobs chuck wedges, but they don't work 100% of the time. I never had much luck with that Bicycle Research tool. We had one at the bike co-op and it never was much worth a darn in my experience. I think it only works if your threads are just a little bunged up, not totally hosed. |
