Fork Replacement Question
Did a search, didn’t find any answers ... I’ve got a Diamondback hybrid that I bought on the cheap, figuring to swap out some stuff and build a bike for neighborhood rides, gravel paths, etc. I’ve already replaced saddle, grips, brakes, and laced up a pretty bulletproof set of wheels (steel-axle Deore hubs/Sapim Strong spokes/Velocity Chukker rims). It’s a big, slow, heavy bike — for a big, slow, heavy rider :-) The last item on the list is to get rid of the SR suspension fork. I have a suspension-corrected (Surly Karate Monkey) fork that has the correct axle-to-crown length. My plan was to get a crown race and star nut that’ll match my existing headset and just swap the fork over that way. Is that doable, or am I missing something? Thanks in advance ... I’ve got a fair amount of bike-wrenching experience, but it’s all road bikes and mostly threaded forks. |
Getting the right crown race means matching the make and model headset you now have and getting the right part from the maker. Pretty straight forward. Star nuts are universal for a given steerer diameter (1" or 1-1/8") and any bike shop should have what you need.

The crown race on your original fork can be removed and reused assuming that it fits on your new fork. Star nuts are inexpensive and pretty much universal for a given steer tube diameter. Buy a new one
