Bottom bracket tool
 

MY Raleigh Tamland has a clicking noise that I think I have narowed down to the bottom bracket. I've ordered a SM-BBR60 bottom bracket, and a TL-FC32 tool to install it. I figured the TL-FC32 would be the correct tool to remove the old bracket.

The bottom bracket showed up yesterday, but not the tool. When I held the plastic adapter (TL-FC25) up to my existing BB, the outside if it was larger. Very similar in size and shape, but a bit larger. How do I identify the tool I need to remove the existing BB?

AFAIK there are two "standards" of external threaded Bb bearing "cups" tool fits (as Shimano has initiated). The FC32 is the old standard and still used by many other brands of BBs. The FC25 is the reducer to allow the older tool to fit the newer cup's fit OD. The photo sure looks like the older standard is the tool to use, but I can't confirm this without having all in hand.

I suspect you still need the FC32, or equivalent, tool to remove the old BB. If you were to bring into the shop I work at the frame with BB cups in place, but the crankset removed already, and asked us to remove the cups we'd charge you $5 to $25 depending on what's going on. An easy loosening of old cups would be on the short end. If something weird or really frozen in place is going on then the cost would be on the high end. I suggest waiting until the FC32 tool is in hand myself and trying it yourself.

If this means you miss a few days riding then you've learned the cost of only one bike when you do service on it that you are unsure/unprepared about. Andy

No clue, there are no identifying markings on it.

I did measure the OD of the BB, and its 44mm. The new bbr60 is 41mm.

If there is no need to save it a good size pair of channellocks will likely get it out of there.

use your tl fc 32 to remove

I did, and it worked perfectly.

That's what I originally hoped for, but got worried when the TL-FC25 was bigger than the old BB. The old BB was a Samox, same as the crankset.
