Hydro Bleed Question
lately my SRAM Hydro road brake (front one) has been a little spongy, when I pull the lever (not snapping back), but there is no rub and the brakes work fine otherwise. at what point do you bring in the bike to bleed the brakes? Will this get worse, better? I’m new to hydros. Thanks! |
How long have you had the brakes? SRAM recommends bleeding annually, which is good advise for these brakes. Spongyness is a pretty clear sign that they need to be bled, and they'll also work better for longer if bled regularly. Also they sometimes have trouble with the master cylinder in the lever sticking, which is serviceable but considerably more labor intensive than just bleeding.

By all means buy the bleed kit. I bought this kit for my Rival 1 levers, and it absolutely could not be easier.
You can teach yourself in less than 10 minutes, and will be amazed at how simple it is. And we have it worse than everybody else (I guess,) having to deal with DOT fluid instead of mineral oil. |
Newer Sram hydros have what they call Bleeding Edge bleed ports that require a special fitting for the syringe. This system has made the bleeding process much simpler than previous Sram/Avid systems.
Just be certain you get the correct bleed kit. |
"SRAM's Bleeding Edge technology is a change in standard which seems to be spreading to all SRAM's brake models from 2017-onwards including Guide, Code and Level brakes"
So unless you have an MTB, it shouldn't be an issue. |

Only 6 weeks. It’s only a slight sponginess, no sticking. Was going to take to a shop, but if annual is recommended maybe I’ll buy the bleed kit and learn it myself. make an appointment and they can show you how, in person , and hook you up with the bleed kit, discounted from full price, as a recent customer. .... |
