Nexus Hub Replacement Options

I have what I believe to be a 2013 Trek Soho Deluxe that has an 8-speed Nexus SG-8R31 internally geared hub with a roller hub rear brake and a Gates Centertrack belt drive. A previous owner apparently kept the bike close to salt water so I rebuilt and lubricated the hub and replaced the bearings as directed in the service manual. Everything looked great except the outer bearing track had rusted and is now pitted. I may be wrong, but the bearing track looks like it is built into the hub's outer housing and isn't independently replaceable. I haven't been able to find an outer casing to replace it with or even an entire hub with this model number.

The hub shifts perfectly into any gear. The bike rides smoothly in 5th gear when the sprocket turns at the same rate as the wheel. However, it vibrates in any other gear since this causes relative movement between the wheel and sprocket. The hub almost shakes the bike during coasting at speed when the sprocket is stationary because I'm not pedaling but the wheel is rotating quickly. I was hoping it would smooth out after I rode it for a while but there hasn't been any noticeable improvement.

Is there anything that I can do to fix the hub I have, or can anyone suggest another compatible Nexus or Alfine hub model that will work with the Gates Drive and the roller brake? I haven't been able to figure out which would be compatible despite multiple readings of Sheldon Brown's page about this. I really love the bike but I need to address this hub issue to make it rideable. Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

I had that same model but sold it because it was plagued by numerous little problems.

Aaron's Bicycle Repair in Seattle would be the place to help you, either with replacement parts or technical advice. They seem to be the experts on Shimano IGHs.

To save re - lacing the wheel, buy another hub, and replace the core ,
and maybe the roller brake too.

Isnít the Gates Drive simply a very special-looking sprocket?
If it is, you should be able to move it to another Nexus hub of your choice.
