46t 130 bcd ring with ramps?
 
Looking to stick a 46t ring in the middle position of a road triple. 130 bcd. Will also be using a ring in the small position, so it would be preferable to have some sort of ramps or pins. Will be using with a 10 speed chain.

Having a real hard time finding this. I can find plenty of 46t, 130 bcd rings, but they are all unramped single speed rings made for 1/8Ē chains, and I am using 10 speed.

Any ideas where to find this? Or if it even exists? I am having a hard time imagining when either a standard double or triple would normally use a 46t ring, so they may not exist, but figured I would at least look.

I recently bought a Willow 46 tooth middle triplizer ring to turn a 130 bcd double into a triple. The teeth are not ramped or pinned though. I think you’re going to have a rough time finding a ramped/pinned middle ring with this tooth count.

Can I ask which shifters you are using and which front derailleur you are using?

Interesting product. I don't need that though, because the crank is a triple with a place for the small ring already.

I understand you donít want to veer off - I was just curious if such a configuration could be reliably shifted in index mode or is it too finicky, thus - friction only.

Ramps work by capturing the chain at particular entry angles, which at a minimum tends to require pairing with a small ring of a particular size. It's possible to find pinned&ramped chainrings that do not have specified pairings, but in my experience the pins and ramps are mostly decorative.

Personally, I'd grab any non-1x chainring in the appropriate BCD and tooth count. If it works great, great. If it doesn't work great, throw a friction shifter at it.

Good point. I'm not that set on ramps and pins, and if non-R&P makes it much cheaper, I'll go with it.

as HTupolev notes, ramped and pinned chainrings are designed to work with a specific entry point and angle (that is, off a specific tooth of the smaller ring) that lifts the chain up to the bigger ring. The ramps and pins aren't very valuable without matching size and orientation of the smaller chainring, and can sometimes make shifting worse. I experienced much worse shifting with a ramped/pinned 46t ring designed to mate with a 36t, but I was using it with a 34t. After I went to an undecorated chainring, the shifting was better.

When I looked through the links people have shared in this thread, none of the chainrings specified what size of smaller ring they're designed to work with.
A 46t middle ring is even more of an issue, because (a) anything you buy will be designed presuming use as an outer ring, and (b) your big ring will have ramps/pins/gates optimized for a 39 or 40 or 42 tooth middle ring.

Based on this, I suspect a 46t chainring with ramps and pins could make things worse, or could make things better, and is a big hunk of trial-and-error. I'd go with a basic ungated ring to start with.

  • I thought the OP was talking about a 46 tooth chainring for the middle ring.
  • It is not clear how using either the "US Made" or the Origin8 which both appear to be designed to be the big ring, would work as the middle.

I found a non-ramped 46t 130bcd ring. I think I will try that.

Big ring considerations are a non-issue here.

Cyclocross race double cranksets use 46t outers , inner a 39. , so major brands are all over that niche..

no granny , low gear is get off and run.. carrying the bike..
