shimano wh-501 rear hub replacement parts?
Hi
I've been having an issue with my rear wheel (shimano wh-501).
Either the axle is slightly bent, or the cone on the non drive side is slightly warped, as it's very difficult to unscrew the cone off the axle by hand. it gets stuck halfway thru screwing it on/off the axle. I can only remove it with a cone wrench and some force.
Even after cleaning the axle and cone and making sure there's no grit or anything in any of the threads, it still happens, making it very difficult for me to adjust the cone to get things feeling smooth.
It's odd though, because the same cone nut screws on fine on a spare axle I have, and a spare cone nut I have screws on fine on the stock wh-501 axle. What the hell? The stock parts just aren't meshing with eachother for some reason.
I wish I could try simply swapping the cone nut but the stock wh-501 cone nut has a cover on it that I can't seem to remove to put on the spare.
The spare axle I have also isn't the right size for the wheel, so I'd like to just replace everything with new parts.
I see that there's replacement kits for the front wheel from this set readily available that include a new axle, both cone nuts & bearings, but I can't seem to find anything for the rear.
Are there any universal parts I can use, or do they have to be shimano brand? Where can I find them?
Thanks

Ask someone who can see the issue?
Bike shops get parts for older components all the time..
Shimano parts should be easy to order by asking..
bring the wheel to show them what you need.

Chase the axle threads with a die nut?
There are axles that are 3/8" x 26 TPI. That's VERY close to a 1mm thread pitch. .03846" vs .03937".
10x1mm Cones will thread on to the 3/8" axle, but not the reverse.

Maybe just get a replacement axle and use the OEM cones. Your LBS can search the Shimano B to B website for replacement parts availability. Andy
