Cracked triangle lower
Crack in swingarm outside the bearing recess
...and inside the bearing recess
In the, very recently removed rear triangle lower (swingarm) out of my 2013 Trek Slash 8 there is a crack adjacent to one of the bearings for the mounting spindle. Two independent bike shops have said categorically that any attempt at welding this will fail because (a) it will simply crack again or (b) it will distort the swingarm.
Replacement is $620 AUD and is more than I can manage. I have feelers out for a used replacement.
Does anyone have any insight re' the repairability of this part?

It's toasted. Welding: it will need the crack ground out because it will be contaminated and to get penetration, welded, heat treated, then the bearing housing re-machined beacuse it will distort and then it'll probably crack again alongside the weld anyway. Not sure if it's a forging, in which case it'll definitely crack again because the weld will be weaker than the forging.
Sucks...

I don't know how Trek's warranty works in Australia but here in the US most of their frames have lifetime replacement warranty. Ask you dealer to see what Trek will do for you.

Original owner?Trek warranty?
I understand where a commercial business would not weld this.
Myself, I would weld it, fully understanding that it may not work. What would I have to lose besides the case of beer it would cost me through guys I know.

Time to move on to your next bike..
you decide , do you really need another dual suspension frame bike,
of weight saving aluminum, or will a hard tail be adequate for your needs ..

Yes, Trek does have a lifetime warranty for the Australian market too, unfortunately that's for original owners only and I'm the fourth owner!

I like the logic; take a chance, what is there to lose? I've known some excellent engineers/welders in the past but, sadly, no more.

Truth is, most of the time a hard tail would be fine but most of the time I'm not doing the sort of riding that I most enjoy, fast flow trails. I consider it something similar to owning a sports motorcycle; most of the time the damn thing is brutally uncomfortable, awkward in traffic and entirely impractical but every now and then, on the right day and in its natural habitat, it sings like Pavarotti and dances like Fred Astaire and the world is made anew.

Funny you should mention that!! I wondered the very same thing myself. I went back to the first video clip I put up and, sure enough, there it is, before any serious attempt was made at getting it out. In fact it's remarkable, given how visible it is, that I didn't spot it sooner, or at least it would be if the whole process had involved a little less Glenmorangie!!
