EGS Synchro Shift--a bit of folklore

I ran into one of these today! It was on a 90's Mongoose Cambridge. One twist shifter controlling both derailleurs, 3 x 7, eleven shift positions. The bike came into a non-profit shop to resell at a thrift store. I adjusted derailleurs and cables and got it to work. Funny thing.

You can still buy one on eBay.

A friend of mine bought a fleet of bicycles equipped with those for his day tour company back in the 90s. The idea was that his clients would not be knowledgeable in the operation of dual shifters, and this way they could spend more time riding, pointing out local attractions, and less time explaining the gears to novices.
They were big and clunky, but seemed to work alright when properly adjusted. Nowadays, multi speed gearhubs would be preferred for an application like that.
