Removing a derailleur hanger?

I've got a couple of old rear derailleurs that have the hanger or "claw" attached. I've asked several people about the viability of removing the claw so that the derailleur can be directly mounted to a bike frame.

What's the verdict, does it work this way, or is the mounting bolt different on rear derailleurs like this?

Here's one example showing the back side:

Done often enough. No problem. As long as the frame has the proper hanger tab (and on older bikes this isn't a valid assumption) the detachable hanger plate (always hated the term "claw") isn't needed and easily removed.

BTW the Campy NR der (the second photo) has a Japanese hanger plate on it already. Shimano IIRC. The Rally der still ahs an OEM campy hanger plate, which has some value to some collectors by it's self. Andy

Yes.
No.

The derailleur bolt mounting thread is about as standard as it gets in the bicycle world. With only a couple exceptions it's 10 x 1mm thread.
