9 speed rapid fire dead

I have an old school gary fisher 9 speed great bike but my thumb shifter appears to have died.....gets stuck will shift but requires much in the way of wiggling back and forth to engage.
That being said will a SRAM 9 speed work with the XT 9 speed rear der. It is a detached / separate thumb shifter from brake levers.
thanks

Flush with WD-40 to dissolve the old grease/gunk.

Sram and Shimano have different pull ratios, so the shifter swap won't work. Sounds like just some shifter maintenance is needed...

All else, Bike shops can get repair parts, long after trend focused online sellers have moved on to the latest thing being promoted..

Stop wiggling, you'll make it worse ! WD40, as suggested, to the rescue.

If I had tried the WD40 trick on 8-speed Rapid Fire shifters a decade or so ago, I probably could have avoided 'upgrading' to 9-speed SRAM shifters, cassette and RD on a previous tandem.

I've mostly found the opposite to be true. Maybe I'm not using the "trend focused" online sellers.
