ultegra brifter only shifts up

I found out midway through my morning commute today that the outer lever (that moves the rear derailer inward) does not work. One time I caught it and it shifted in 2 cogs but mostly it just floats free, no resistance.

Is there anything I can do for this or does it need replacing? It is ~20 years old.

Thanks in advance.

You can peel the hoods back, spray WD40 liberally on the shifter bits, blow out with compressed air then some good lube like TriFlow applied. It will be messy while you’re doing all this but this often fixes dead Shimano shifters.

I would spray it with White Lightning as a cleaner and then Boesheild T9 for lube.

I don't even bother to peel the hoods, just work the levers and blow Triflow or the like liberally into the mechanism. Enough to dribble down the levers, work the levers, then do it again in a day. I wipe up what I can and wait a few days for more dribble to wipe up. I put these buckets on until the dribble stops.

Of course, you might actually have a broken mechanism. Plenty of other threads about this problem with Shimano brifters.

This is my thought too. The shifter just takes up and lets out the cable. It may be working fine but if the cable is hanging up somewhere between the shifter and derailleur, then it will not shift.

Here's what I usually find when the downshifting starts to deteriorate. 6600 Ultegra 10S

cable frayed at shifter won't allow the cable to release.
