3 Speed Nexus with Friction Shifter popping out of gear

I have had this new-ish Schwinn that has a Shimano Nexus internal geared 3-speed. It came with a twist/grip shifter. I put smaller handle bars so I can get it in and out of the faster and avoid hitting the center post of the door, which some of the older rail cars have. The twist grip didn't fit on the shorter bars so I changed to a thumb friction shifter.

Now I hadn't ridden the bike in over a year, but my kids were riding it. They never mentioned anything wrong with the shifting but they never knew what it was like with the grip shifter. I recently started commuting with it again and noticed it sometimes pops out of the second and third gears. It doesn't pop out into another gear, it just sorta skips a tooth.

If I put the thumb shifter all the way to the highest gear so I know it's firmly committed to that gear, it still occasionally skips.

Does anyone know if the Nexus grip shifter does something special or did it always do it and I just forgot? I am thinking I might need a more rigid shifter cable, but then again I really would like to see if anyone has any input.

Thanks!

stem shaft is 7/8" maybe you can put the nexus grip shifter on the stem ... ?

It sounds like riding the bike while between gears has worn gears or pawls inside the hub, so that how it does not fully engage even when positioned correctly. The only thing the twist shifter does is cause the cable pull to be consistent and at the length the hub requires. It is not hard to duplicate its function with a thumb shifter, but you need to keep it in the engaged positions when applying force on the pedals. I have had this same frustration with a thumb shifter that slipped. l expect you are going to need to rebuild or replace the hub.
