What size socket cap screw on Salsa Shaft?

I have stripped the tilt-adjustment socket cap screw on a Salsa Shaft seat post. I always thought the socket cap was a little loose for a 6mm hex, but today it stripped out. I tried to replace it with an M6-1.0, but it didn't fit. The I tried a 1/4-inch-20, and that didn't fit.

A 6mm hex did not fit into either socket cap, it was too big. Does anyone have an idea what size this screw is?

IDK, but, try jamming in a fractional hex or torx bit? or dremel out a slot for a screwdriver?

Sorry, I have been unclear. I was able to get the screw out of the part, and the threads of the part and screw are not damaged. The socket has been rounded. So I'd like to replace it with a new screw, but I could Dremel a slot if I had to.

Not sure what's missing. Maybe measure the threads of the screw? Maybe take it to a screw store and physically match it? Otherwise it's just blind anonymous internet guessing.

The fact that the original takes a 6mm hex key is a clue that it should be an M8 socket head cap screw.

I went to Home Despot to try to match the screw visually. No luck there. Tomorrow I will begin the Tour of the Hardware Stores.

I don't know much about matching screws. I did see the M8 at Home Despot, the diameter of the shaft looked much larger than the original screw. I wonder ifthis screw is not metric– a 6mm screw is just under a 1/4 inch. Thanks.

That will be the last resort. This seat post has been out of production for a decade, I wonder if they will still remember.

Ace Hardware stores generally carry the best selection of stainless metric fittings of any major chain.

The two hex bolts for the tilt adjustment are have a 5mm shaft with a 6mm socket head. If you’ve removed the bolt take it and the seat post with you when you’re searching for something that fits. Quit guessing.

Went to my local hardware store (it came up when I searched for Ace, but it's not an Ace) and found a suitable replacement. It's an M5x1.0-30. However, the socket is an 5mm, the original screw had a 6mm socket. Works fine, thanks to all for the help.

OK "Shaft" is a seat post made for , Branded, Salsa.. (finally clear with picture)..

5x 1 tpmm, a bit different than more common finer thread 5 x 0.8 tpmm ..

6 x 1 tpmm, otoh, is a common combination.. [& In various lengths , of course.. ]

Smaller chain (fewer stores), I have a Marine supply store ... lots of stainless on seagoing fishing boats..

I live in a Seaport town.. ..

....

That's a great seatpost, btw. I still have one on an old bike. I don't know why they don't make it anymore, especially given the s****y setback seatpost Salsa is currently selling.

I agree. The Shaft is a great bike part. I wish they would bring it back.

I’ve been stashing Salsa Shafts away for years. I’ll never run out.
