5800 105 - Lost Three Gear Sweep from Smallest Cog?

First off, I acknowledge it's possible it was always like this and I just wasn't aware, and am now hyperaware since I've moved the cassette from the stock wheels to new wheels and back now to the stock wheels; I acknowledge that I should (will) get, and likely need, an RD adjustment anyway at this point, and plan to get one, so this issue might flush itself out anyway.

But I noticed today that I can't sweep three gears if I start from the smallest cog, it will only downshift two with a solid full sweep of the brifter. From any other cog, including the second smallest cog, it sweeps three gears nicely.

Is 5800 only able to sweep two gears from the smallest cog? I always thought it could sweep three from the smallest cog, but again kind of odd to be on the big ring and suddenly need to downshift three, so like I said maybe I just never noticed.

Try tightening the cable a bit. There should be a barrel adjuster on the derailleur where the cable housing meets it. Turn it counter-clockwise 1/4 turn and see how it shifts. I use the smallest cog, three gear sweep as a guide to adjust mine. When the cable is just tight enough to make this work it shifts well across all gears.

Perfect, so it should sweep from the smallest cog...I'll let the shop know and have them take care of it when I have the RD adjusted. Having bought the bike a year ago now, it's probably naturally due for cable tension adjustments anyway, regardless of moving the cassette around. Thanks.

Yes, the shop mechanic will probably turn the barrel adjuster 1/4 turn at a time.
