St 7400 8-speed shifter replacement
so let me get this right. After researching and reading Sheldon Brown’s site, I can replace my worn out Dura Ace 7400 series 8-speed shifter on my Kestrel 200sci with any shimano 9-speed shifter. Am I close to right? What about 9-speed micro shift?

Yes, 9 sp Shimano road shifters with a RD-740x will shift 8 sp. Extra click will be unused and needs to be blocked w/limit screw on RD. Even Duraace 9 sp was changed to have the same pull ratio as the rest of the lineup.
If Microshift is fully compatible with Shimano @ 9 sp, then it should have the same cable pull.

I realize my response isn't exactly helpful, but back when I had an Ultegra 8sp bike with DT shifters, I got some used Dura-Ace 8sp STI levers as a Christmas gift from a Campy rider (didn't know about the DA quirk). They actually worked just fine with the Ultegra derailleur!
