Covered eyelets

I feel like this may be the dumbest question of all time. I apologize in advance.

Im trying to install a rack on my 2019 Specialized Sirrus and the top eyelets are covered. Looks like black metal or rubber “plugs.” Do I just peel/pry them out or what? The rear wheel dropout eyelets were open, so I’m completely confused.

Thanks in advance!

They are probably just rubber plugs. I had something similar on my Giant Iguana and I just popped them out with a fingernail.

The top eyelets probably open into the seatstay tubes and the plugs are there to keep water out and keep the threads clean. When you install the rack, the mounting bolts do the same thing.

Thanks for the answers. It turns out that yes these are just plugs, but I was trying to "pick" them out with no movement at all because they're actually screwed in to the threads. Just needed some pliers to start the turning a bit and then I could unscrew them by hand and mount my rack. Thanks again.

if you ever have trouble threading a screw into them, it may be because of the paint on the threads. before you force a screw in & possibly crooked, wrecking the threads on the screw or frame (which I've done), I now use a skinny pen knife to scrape some of the paint of the interior threads. then, to help prevent rust, I use a minuscule amount of anti-seize

5 x 0.8 tpmm is the typical fitting .. a tap that size can clean out the paint..
