Headset for 1999 Trek 5500 Carbon frameset?
Can someone recommend the right headset to mate this headtube and fork?
Do I need some kind of adapter?
The frameset is a 1999 Trek 5500.
The headtube is 1 1/8"; and the steerer is 1"
Note 1:
I had bought a headset advertised as 1" on ebay and it doesn't fit right at all.
Headset cups are undersized; and very oddly the steerer tube is oversized.
Note 2:
I eventually found a thread that seems to explain that the the Trek 5500 is a hybrid frameset - 1 1/8 headtube and 1" steerer.

Thanks for the advise
1999 Trek 5500: Frame and Fork
Diameter of Headtubes. I'm reading this as 1 1/8. (I probably torqued the calipers)
Lower part of the fork where race goes - -exactly 1 inch.
The cheapo headset bought on ebay doesn't fit.
for some reason even the lower race is oversized. Definitely the wrong headset

That fork I believe is missing the Trek graphics, do you know that is a 1999 Trek 5500 fork? A standard 1" headset (ISO standard) would be a 30mm crown race ID and a 26.4mm steerer OD, so convert your vernier to millimeters and measure carefully, in several spots, a crown race ID can be 27mm or 26.4mm, that only a 0.024" difference and it matters. Then call Crane Creek and give them the info, they supplied Trek with headsets for the 5500s and will have one to fit at a lot less money than Chris King or take it to your local bike shop and they will sell you what you need. You could also read up on headsets at a site like SheldonBrown.com and figure it out.

800-234-2725 is Cane Creek's number.
Tell whomever answers that you need help determining what headset you need and would like to order it. Two guys do this and they will be able to tell you exactly what you need and take your order right there.
The Cane Creek 40 series is nice - it has a 40 year warranty and will be much less expensive than King. If you want the same quality as King then go for the Cane Creek 110 which is an amazing product with 110 year warranty.

Resolved. It turns out a standard 1" threadless headset (in this case the FSA Orbit X) fits perfectly.
Thanks for the good advise Davidad, easyupbut and TimothyH.! Good to know there's resources out there to resolve the most complex headset problems.
I think I was thrown off track by a thread indicating non-matched headtube/steer for an early OCLV Trek
(See here: https://forums.roadbikereview.com/co...le-350382.html )
After trying that cheap allegedly 1" headset I bought from eBay - which didn't fit anything, I was thrown off again... and I probably didn't measure correctly either.
Notes. The FSA Orbit X is actually a great headset. Lightweight, high quality components, smooth action, nice fit and finish. I lucked out! Typically sells for around $60 - I got mine for less than $30.
The FSA Orbit X headset
Pieces assembly nicely on fork
I don't know why I got this so cheap. It normally sells for about $60
fork race settled in nicely. I tapped it into place with a flat screwdriver. lightly tapping while rotating.
DIY headset press. Long bolt with large washers and nuts to press cups into headtubes. (Also required some light tapping with hammer for alignment)
