Raised Flange Hubs

Why doesn't anybody use the raised flange hubs anymore. Not sure if that is the correct term. I always thought they were cool looking.

They are quite common on fixed-gear wheels. They do look cool.

I suspect they weight to much more than low flange hubs do. Roger

High flange track hubs can weigh 35% more, especially the front.

As an example, Mack low flange rear track hubs are 197 grams while high flange are 233 grams. That's about 15%

Dia Compe Grand Compe track hubs weigh 176 grams vs 270 grams respectively, 35% more.

One:
It is cheaper to cast and polish or paint small flange hubs as there are no decorative holes to deal with.

Two:
Broken flanges. I have a set of Campy NR large flange hubs with a broken flange on the rear.

Both true. I've broken the flange on two NR track hubs. But my two front high flange (OP- the proper term) Tipo hubs have gone on forever.

It is largely a matter of marketing and style. It is possible to make stiffer side-to-side wheels with high flange hubs. When that becomes "a thing" we see runs of those hubs. Boutique makers have made high flange and very high flange hubs all along.

Rene Herse and other constructeurs of his era even riveted higher flanges onto existing hubs!

I used to lust after some of those wacky roval hubs... To bad they had such lousy reputations. (and that I'm so danged slow.)

I have two inexpensive sets of fixed gear wheels and they both have high-flange hubs. One is solid and one has the cutouts. The flanges are about the same diameter as my 17t cogs so that's extra cool.
