Wheelset part identification.

Just received a new wheelset I purchased thanks to the recommendations of some of the members on here and was hoping I could get one last bit of help from you guys. The wheels came with this piece that has "USE ONLY 9/10 8" written on it:

1) What exactly is it? I'm assuming it's supposed to be used on the cassette, but does it have a name and what is it's purpose?

2) Does it need to be used? If so, where exactly is it supposed to be placed?

I already installed everything (without that piece), it seems to be running fine (though I haven't actually ridden the bike just yet), but I don't want to risk ruining anything, so figured I'd ask first. I'm running an 11-speed Shimano cassette, if that matters.

Thanks!

Well since we can't see the piece you write of I'll guess that you have a cassette spacer that is usually used behind a 10 speed cassette when installed on many freehub bodies (like Shimano). The spacer takes up that tiny amount of cassette overall width difference between an 11 speed and the other cog counts, so the lock ring will fully secure the cassette.

But what do I know since I can't see the item:) Andy

You're quick! I edited the pic in right after I made the post. But thank you for your help. So basically it's not required for an 11-speed cassette, right?

Correct.

8, 9 and 10 speed road cassettes are narrower and so they require a spacer to take up the extra space.

The spacer is not needed for wider 11 speed road cassettes. <--Note that I said road cassettes. MTB is different.
