TA Chinook chainring: meaning of 18mm / 23mm mounts?

The Specialties TA Chinook outer chainrings mention 18 mm or 23 mm mount.

What does this mount signify?

It looks like that is the width of the interface where the ring bolts to the spider. It appears to be an aesthetic thing to match the width of the arc under the bolt hole to the width of the crank spider arms.
