What to call it?

What would be a good name for a triple crankset with the outer ring removed? Doublized triple?

Why no outer ring? Doesn't the absence of the outer ring mess up the spacing and cause the nuts/bolts to not fasten properly?

A converted double. This was how Raleigh speced their Gran Sport in the mid 1970s. A Stronglight crankset with a ring guard in position of the outer ring. A simple swap out of the guard and a smaller inner ring and one had a great triple. Andy

I'd guess "triple crankset with the outer ring removed."

You can use single-speed chainring bolts to attach just the "middle" ring and no "outer", since they're shorter.

I don't know of a good name for this setup, but it's an inexpensive way to achieve a sub-compact double. Smaller-BCD doubles exist, but are often harder to find or more expensive than an old 110/74 triple crank.
