Adjusting Shimano Nexus SG-3C41 IGH (wheel is a bit hard to rotate)
Hi, everybody.
I have 2 bikes with Shimano Nexus SG-3C41 IGH installed which are quite similar cheap kind of city bikes. When I lift rear part of each bike with one my hand and give the rear wheel a good spin with another hand, I register very different spin-down times for these bikes, like 2-3 times of difference (wheel on one bike freely rotates 2-3 times longer).
One notable difference between them is that I had internal coastal brake removed on one of them (on the one that spins longer), substituting it with a rim brake. But that shouldn't create such difference, right? Coastal brake shouldn't be engaged unless you apply some force to pedal in backward direction? It definitely shouldn't dissipate so much power when not engaged?
Other than this, what can also cause such big difference? I know that for many older regular hubs you need to do a proper adjustment of cones, or wheel will either shake and rattle, or will be harder to spin - like shown in this video:
Is there some kind of nut I may be need to tighten just right in SG-3C41 hub as well?

Not all coaster brakes are created equal. Some have a return spring that pulls the brake shoes clear of the brake drum when not engaged. Others do let the shoes drag against the greased inside of the brake drum.
I believe the last Shimano IGH I had apart didn’t use a dedicated return spring. And that does add noticeable drag when spinning a wheel unloaded.
