What durable shifter do you recommend for a Shimano Nexave front derailleur?

We're trying to get an old 2005 Trek 7300 comfort bike working and have to replace a broken shifter. It had a crappy SRAM Pro 4.0 shifter with plastic pieces inside that broke. What would be the most durable shifter for not a lot of money that I can get for this that is 3X8 speed and compatible with a Shimano Nexave front derailleur and SRAM X-7 rear derailleur?

And whatever shifter you recommend, where is a good place to buy it at the best price?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

If you're just replacing both shifters, another SRAM X4 set would be your best bet. Really, if you don't crash it into things it should last as long as the rest of the bike. If that is a problem, you could use SRAM 3.0 Comp grip shifters. Be sure to specify 3x8 speeds. If you're OK with just replacing the front shifter, Shimano's Acera SL-M3000 or Alivio SL-M4000 might be more rugged.

Shimano and SRAM 3-speed MTB front derailleurs have the same pull rates. That means you can use a SRAM X series shifter with a Shimano MTB front derailleur or a Shimano M series shifter with a SRAM front derailleur.

As for where to buy this stuff online, I'm a little out of the loop there. But I'm sure your local bike shop can order it for you from QBP.

Thanks for the great, helpful info! Actually, the original shifters were SRAM 4.0 Pro grip shifters, but you're saying the SRAM X4 would also work if I replace both shifters? We only need to replace the one broken shifter for the front derailleur, but I thought I might have to buy shifters in pairs based on how most are sold online.

In any case, you've given me lots of options, so thanks very much!

All the SRAM and Shimano shifters I mentioned are available in pairs or singles.

Thanks again for your help! I actually found a good deal on a Shimano SL-M310L single front shifter on ebay for about $13, so ordered that and will just replace the one.
