Creaky Pedals
I have a Trek Verve 2. When I pedal with a lot of force, uphill etc., my pedals creak, it sounds like it is where they connect to the cranks....I took it to my LBS and they checked the bottom bracket and said it was likely what I said above. I am a big guy, but I still hate the creaking sound. Does this sound right? Can it be fixed?

If you have another set of pedals, mount those and see if the noise persists. If it is gone, the problem is in the pedals. If it's still there, the problem is somewhere else; possibly bottom bracket, crank arm/spindle interface, seat rails, even handlebars or elsewhere.

Try easy things first. As suggested by JohnDThompson try a pedal swap. Also try thoroughly cleaning both pedal and crank threads and use grease on the threads and mating surfaces, and perhaps install pedal washers, when reassembling; torque correctly. Try greasing the mating surfaces of your axles, quick releases and dropouts and ensure that the QRs are really tight. Chainring bolts are another potential trouble spot; I clean them and their mating surfaces and and grease only the male threads.

Almost all pedals are too TIGHT. Take them apart and see what's happening. Relube and loosen if possible.

Are you sure the creaking is from the pedals and not the BB- crank area.
I had creaking from BB area on my Cannondale when pedaling out of the saddle. I spent a lot of time on the BB30 brgs. Eventually, determined that the creaking was from the chainring bolts. I disassembled the chainrings, and cleaned all matting surfaces well. Then re assembled using Loktite 202 on the threads, and torquing the bolts to the proper spec. Torquing properly is probably more important than the thread locker. It's often very difficult to pin point exact the source of these noises. |
