Are Bike Shops Hiring In Your City?

I keep reading here on BF that bike shops are swamped with sales and repairs due to Covid 19. They are selling out bikes and scrambling to put new ones together.

I just checked for the first time ever the Help Wanted craigslist ads for Bike Mechanics in my area and there is only one listing. I'm sure mechanics get around and probably know each other so word of mouth goes a long way, but one listing for an area with over 9 million people seems strange.

To some degree larger shops will use the job listings on industry websites. Bicycle retailer for example has listings on the website, and probably at one point in the print magazine.

I have a close friend who owns a local bike shop in MA. He is allowed to offer curbside pickup, but customers are not allowed to enter the store. He said his April bike sales were down 80% Y/Y. His service is booming and he's backed up 2-3 weeks because he can't get all of his mechanics back. Many of his employees are nervous about returning to work and are making more $ staying home at least until the extra federal money dries up ($600/week).

I believe an experienced bike mechanic could walk into any shop around here and have a job on the spot.

In my experience a shop will run a general help wanted ad only if desperate due to the flood of applicants who are curious, or those who think anybody can fix a bike, or whatever. Most shops will have a folder of resumes from qualified hopefuls who've already stopped by to inquire. If you're looking, get out there and knock on some doors and have your resume with you.

And take you skillz with you. I was in a new town applying for shop work and was handed a pretzeled wheel and was told, "True it and you're hired." I did but chose a different shop in that town.
