Crossed Chain

Hi all.

I just bought my first bike, Viking XRR Roma. Its used and was couriered to me. Due to my naivety and this the chain had become tangled. I managed to get most of the loops out but now seem to have one left. Its also on the wrong side of the rear derailleur i.e I know the chain needs to go on the cog but its not on the side of the cogs.. I've watched a few videos from youtube and read a few things but nothing seems to tell me how to fix this. Given the fact the chain hasnt been taken off the bike I guess I can rectify without breaking it? Have tried every possible way.

Pic attached, I would appreciate all the help I can get. I want to learn to fix it myself before taking it to LBS (where cost of service will mean I should have just bought a new bike anyway).

Put the pic on a hosting site.

Just write the URL of the pic in the plain text of your message. You might have to remove the www and change the "." to a " dot ".

If you use Google photos to host the pic, then make sure you give the link created when you choose "share".

newbiecyc1 Well, I'm definitely not a bike mechanic but IMHO your rear derailleur is broken. Post a couple more photos of it from different angles, may be someone will be able to come up with some repair advice then.

Oso Polar what makes you think the derailleur is broken? I will take some more photos after work.

This looks like a very well used and abused bike. Best bet will be to take it to a shop and let them deal with it. Even if you do put the chain back on, there is likely going to be a lot of adjusting needed for the derailleurs. And if it's a used as it looks, the chain might actually be ready for replacement.

If you don't have experience with any such, then DIY will be steep learning curve. Might take you longer to go through a shop, but they'll hopefully do a good job getting the bike tuned up so it'll ride well. Have them look at brakes and wheels too.

If I'm wrong about the bike being used, my apologies.

It looks to be seriously twisted and it is not closing - a working derailleur tries to get into a "closed" state, pulls the chain on itself - yours is wide opened without any tension on the chain.

Get the loop in the chain below the chainrings. Then rotate the derailler cage against the spring tension and the loop in the chain should come out.

The wheel cogs go in front of the derailler, catching the upper section of chain- you have to rotate the whole back to make room for the wheel.

^^^^^ This ^^^^

Looking at the above picture, rotate the DR counter-clockwise until everything straightens out.
