Vintage Campagnolo Brake Caliper
Hey guys, I’m having an issue with a ‘90s Campy rear brake caliper opening back up after the lever is pulled. For context I’m using a brand new SRAM Force 22 shifter, all new cables/housing and I don’t feel anything snagging the cable when pulling the lever before anchoring it to the caliper. I’m
Any tips on adjustments or overhaul I could possibly do to improve this? Could there be a compatibility issue? I’ve cleaned the caliper thoroughly and hit the screws and pivot points with tri-flow. It springs back fine when I squeeze it in my hand and definitely has some tension. Thanks again in advance for any insight! I’d love to keep these rather than replacing but they’re definitely not rideable as is. pics of the caliper attached for reference https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d281c0bc3.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7bb40fdba.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5934c614f.jpeg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e3ad4d27d.jpeg |
The only way that can happen is if the cable is slipping. Put a Sharpie mark on the cable where you cinch it down, and see if it's slipping. Taking a little bit of sandpaper can help remove the slick coating on cables at the location where they get bolted down.

Does it seize when you tighten the the nut up to the frame?
If so the caliper needs an overhaul. There maybe grub screws in there but I have never worked on one of these. |

It’s definitely not the cable anchor. It’s the center pivot bolt. I’ve taken the caliper apart and cleaning/lubing all the bolts and pivots. For some reason I can’t remove the center pivot bolt. I’ve removed the 2MM lock bolt but can’t figure out how to separate this section where all the grime is. Any tips here?

The nut where the grub screw was has flats for a wrench. Allen key in the front.

I would say that this brake calliper is a poor choice to use with a SRAM Force brake lever/shifter. The calliper has no release feature since the brake release for Campagnolo brakes is incorporated in the brake lever itself. Thus, it will be difficult to remove and install your wheel if the tire is inflated

Is there a set screw on the underside of the nut?
